Roadway Maintenance Planning & Forecasting surveys
Make smart decisions for road and highway asset management with detailed, laser scan data of your assets.
As an asset owner or manager, you need accurate data to effectively prioritize and forecast maintenance on key infrastructure.
Our best-in-class equipment quickly scans roads and surroundings, collecting millions of data points, up to 100km of road per day, all at safe driving speeds.
- Road inspections
- Asphalt condition reporting (rutting, cracking, roughness, subsurface failures, freeze/thaw degradation, etc)
- Road topography (rutting, drainage, superelevation)
- Line/lane marking conditions
- Supplemental or surrounding asset inspections
- Fences and barriers
- Power lines and poles
Mobile Roadway Scanning
Efficiency
Laser scanning means you get more efficient, accurate data collection with minimal traffic disruption
Use complete and quantifiable data instead of extrapolating from partial analyses – so you can plan for asset maintenance with utmost efficiency
Risk Management
Avoid many of the hazards and safety requirements of traditional surveying (such as traffic volume and speed, lane closures, etc)
Fewer man-hours also means the level of risk is reduced overall
DETAILED & AcCURATE
More precise than traditional surveying, our data is accurate to 5mm, collecting over 1 million points per second
In addition to the roadway itself, our scans pick up surrounding objects such as barriers, power lines, etc. so you have extra data when needed
Roadway Scanning Use Cases
Get objective and quantifiable data on the actual conditions of your asset.
- Planning and designing additions, improvements / upgrades
- Maintenance forecasting and planning
- Monitoring deterioration
- Planning for crack repair + identifying different types of cracks (e.g. longitudinal, transverse, spalling)
- Tracking degradation due to freeze/thaw cycles
- Determining roughness index (smoothness)
- Identifying subsurface failures resulting in divots / pot holes
Deliverables
Tell us what type of deliverable works for you
- Revit model containing important meta data – with data hosting if needed
- Simple plan sets, reports, spreadsheets, and images (PDF, CAD, XLSX, JPEG and beyond)
Client Frequently Asked Questions
How fast do you drive while scanning / collecting the data?
It depends on your needs and the level of detail required – for instance, we COULD drive up to 100km/h. But the best density of data is achieved when driving 60km/h or less
Do you have to shut down the road?
No shut downs are required, however there may be some disruption to traffic speeds.
On highways where we’re driving under the speed limit, we will make use of a traffic accommodation vehicle.
On other roadways where a driving speed of 60km/h won’t impact traffic flows, there’s basically no impact to the flow of traffic.
We always ensure we’re scanning during low-traffic, not peak traffic times.
How long does it take?
Laser scanning itself can often be fairly quick (1-2 minutes per kilometre, depending on conditions) so in terms of collecting the data, you can be assured any down time will be as minimal as possible.
The more time consuming part can be processing the data – there are millions of data points that need to be collected and turned into a meaningful and practical end-product.
We’ll be able to provide a more accurate estimate after we know the details of your project.
Can you scan at night?
Technically, yes.
Day or night does not affect the LiDAR data. However, we typically also take photos to supplement the LiDAR data that would not be as useful if scanning at night.
